The membrane distal half of gp130 is responsible for the formation of a ternary complex with IL-6 and the IL-6 receptor

1995

AbstractGp130 is the signal transducing subunit of the interleukin-6 receptor. Signaling is initiated by the complex formation of gp130 with IL-6 bound to the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R). We have subdivided the extracellular domain of gp130 in two parts and expressed the mutant proteins as soluble IgG fusion proteins in COS-7 cells. By studying the formation of the ternary complex we show that the membrane distal half of gp130 which contains a cytokine receptor domain is responsible for the interaction with the IL-6/IL-6R complex. Interestingly this is the same region which is believed to be involved in specific recognition of the related cytokines LIF, OM, and probably also of CNTF and IL-11.

Understanding Acid Reaction and Diffusion in Chemically Amplified Photoresists: An Approach at the Molecular Level

2011

Acid diffusion in chemically amplified resist might limit the ultimate minimum half-pitch that can be achieved with high sensitivity resists unless diffusion length is reduced until new methods of sensitizing resists are found. Precise knowledge of molecular dynamics of resist materials and advanced techniques need to be developed actively for this issue. In this sense, computer simulations have become a valuable tool in terms of reducing time and costs. However, simulations are generally based on continuum or mesoscale models, which are unable to accurately predict variations at the molecular level. Deeper understanding and investigation of the coupled reaction-diffusion kinetics at the mo…

Three-dimensional architecture of the whole human soleus muscle in vivo

2018

Background Most data on the architecture of the human soleus muscle have been obtained from cadaveric dissection or two-dimensional ultrasound imaging. We present the first comprehensive, quantitative study on the three-dimensional anatomy of the human soleus muscle in vivo using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques. Methods We report three-dimensional fascicle lengths, pennation angles, fascicle curvatures, physiological cross-sectional areas and volumes in four compartments of the soleus at ankle joint angles of 69 ± 12° (plantarflexion, short muscle length; average ± SD across subjects) and 108 ± 7° (dorsiflexion, long muscle length) of six healthy young adults. Microdissection and…

Experimental Investigations on Hair Fibers as Diffusion Bridges and Opiates as Solutes in Solution

1996

Diffusion experiments were performed using clipped hair fibers as diffusion bridges and aqueous solutions of morphine, codeine and dihydrocodeine. Natural as well as predamaged hair fibers were investigated. The test series were conducted at ambient temperature and at high humidity. After 312 or 372 hours the middle segments of the strands were clipped, washed and analyzed by GC/MS. Only when virgin hair samples were used the solutes passed along the fiber at full length resulting in a positive immunological finding at the end of the diffusion bridge. Most of the washing fluids were positive for opiates. All centerpieces had a high opiate content. The opiate concentration in damaged hair wa…

Expression of Drosophila Cabut during early embryogenesis, dorsal closure and nervous system development.

2010

cabut (cbt) encodes a transcription factor involved in Drosophila dorsal closure (DC), and it is expressed in embryonic epithelial sheets and yolk cell during this process upon activation of the Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway. Additional studies suggest that cbt may have a role in multiple developmental processes. To analyze Cbt localization through embryogenesis, we generated a Cbt specific antibody that has allowed detecting new Cbt expression patterns. Immunohistochemical analyses on syncytial embryos and S2 cells reveal that Cbt is localized on the surface of mitotic chromosomes at all mitotic phases. During DC, Cbt is expressed in the yolk cell, in epidermal cells and in…

WCLL breeding blanket design and integration for DEMO 2015: status and perspectives

2017

Abstract Water-cooled lithium-lead breeding blanket is considered a candidate option for European DEMO nuclear fusion reactor. ENEA and the linked third parties have proposed and are developing a multi-module blanket segment concept based on DEMO 2015 specifications. The layout of the module is based on horizontal (i.e. radial-toroidal) water-cooling tubes in the breeding zone, and on lithium lead flowing in radial-poloidal direction. This design choice is driven by the rationale to have a modular design, where a basic geometry is repeated along the poloidal direction. The modules are connected with a back supporting structure, designed to withstand thermal and mechanical loads due to norma…

A neutron point kinetic model for fusion relevant calculations

2012

Abstract In the framework of research activities on fusion reactors a great effort is dedicated by the scientific community to the development of tritium breeding blankets. One of the main goals is to assess the neutronic behaviour of such devices to analyse their tritium breeding performance and to evaluate the required data for their thermal–mechanic and thermal–hydraulic design. Many papers have been published on this topic considering some stationary condition to calculate such important quantities as heating power, gas production and dpa rates, tritium breeding ratio, etc., but not much attention has been focussed to neutronic transport analyses in transient conditions. The present pap…

Automated parametric neutronics analysis of the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed breeder blanket with Be 12 Ti

2017

The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeder blanket is being developed as part of the European Fusion Programme. Part of the programme is to investigate blanket designs relevant for future demonstration fusion power plants. This paper presents neutronics analyses of the HCPB with an alternative neutron multiplier, Be12Ti which is incorporated into the design, replacing the current Be multiplier. A parameter study was performed for a range of geometries to identify the optimal heights of the lithium ceramic and neutron multiplier pebble beds. Automated creation of CAD models followed by conversion to constructive solid geometry (CSG) and unstructured mesh (UM) geometry allows the models to b…

Nuclear performances of the water-cooled lithium lead DEMO reactor: Neutronic analysis on a fully heterogeneous model

2021

Abstract The development of a conceptual design for the Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (DEMO) is a key issue within the EUROfusion roadmap. The DEMO reactor is designed to produce a fusion power of about 2 GW and generate a substantial amount of electricity, relying on a closed tritium fuel cycle: it implies that the breeding blanket (BB) shall guarantee a suitable tritium production to enable a continuous operation without any external supply. The Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) concept is a candidate for the DEMO BB: it uses liquid Lithium Lead as breeder and neutron multiplier and water in PWR condition as coolant. The neutronics analyses carried out in the past have been performed …
